BACKGROUND:
READS is a non-profit agency serving numerous school
districts in southeastern Massachusetts. One of our many programs
is the clinic, which serves children between the ages of 3 and
22 years.
PHILOSOPHY:
The purpose of the READS Clinic is to evaluate children in
order to determine the possible reasons for difficulties that
relate to learning and behavior problems.
SERVICES:
We provide psychoeducational and ancillary evaluations
which include audiologicals, central auditory processing, opthalmologicals, speech & language evaluations, neuropsychologicals,
classroom observations, and specialized assessments for servicing
the evaluation needs of the hearing impaired students.
REFERRAL
PROCESS: Referrals
are accepted at any time during the school year. Referrals are
sent through the Special Education Administrator in the town in
which the child resides. Written information is reviewed by the
Clinic Secretary and referrals are then assigned to
the appropriate professional for testing.

school personnel
OVERVIEW:
An evaluation includes a psychoeducational and a
post-evaluation conference. Parents and school personnel are an integral
part of this conference. They are invited to participate by providing
information to supplement the findings of the READS Evaluation
Team. Parents and school personnel are vital to the discussion of educational
alternatives which take into account the special needs of the student.
A comprehensive report is provided with each evaluation.
STAFF:
The READS Clinic Staff is a multi-disciplinary team that consists
of psychologists and various certified, licensed, and/or
registered specialists. The staff brings to READS an impressive
history of successful employment in the provision of special education
evaluations.

Neurophychologist and Clinical Psychologist
Question: Should I come with my child for testing?
Answer: Yes, if possible. You will then have an opportunity to speak
with the consultant who will be performing the evaluation.
Question: How long does an evaluation take?
Answer: It depends on what types of testing your child has been referred
for. A medical evaluation takes an hour, a psycho-educational takes up
to 3 hours, a conference is scheduled for 45 minutes, an audiological
evaluation - 1 to 2 hours, a central auditory processing evaluation
takes 2-2 1/2 hours, a speech & language evaluation - 2 hours, a
neurological - 1 hour, a neuropsychological - 2-3 hours.
Question: Should my child take his medication on the day of testing?
Answer: Yes, please have your child take whatever medication he/she
usually takes.
Question: Does my child need to be present for the post-evaluation conference?
Answer: If your child is 14 years of age or older, s/he may be present
at the conference. This will be left to the discretion of the parent.
Question: How is a child referred to the READS Clinic?
Answer: A child can only be referred to the READS Clinic through the
Special Education Administrator of the town in which the child resides.
